Internet Advertising with Doritos

DON'T TOUCH MY DORITOS! Whether in a bag or on a crunchy taco shell, you had better keep your hands off my delicious Doritos.

This year Frito-Lay decided to promote Doritos in a new avenue this year during Super Bowl XLVII. In past years they predominately advertised through just television commercials; however, by promoting their Doritos: Crash the Super Bowl contest on Facebook, the Frito-Lay brand was able to receive greater feedback and popularity for their product.

With roughly 2,800 videos submitted, the contestants' videos were chosen by the number of likes received on Facebook and by Frito-Lay personnel. The winners not only have their own commercial featured during the Super Bowl, but also win a substantial cash reward and the chance to work with director/producer Michael Bay (director of the Transformers).

"Doritos’ decision to move its seventh annual 'Crash the Super Bowl' campaign to Facebook proved to be a winner. The Frito-Lay brand—which had anchored the effort on a microsite in years past—drew nearly 100 million views for the five finalist videos in the user-generated contest, breaking its record (L., Dan)."

This contest allowed Frito-Lay to connect directly with their desired audience and persons outside of their target market. By giving contestants incentives to submitting their videos, it allowed them to feel connected to the company and product.

What advertisements are most memorable to you from this past Super Bowl? If you didn't watch it, what's the most recent commercial advertisement that was most memorable to you? Why did these advertisements attract your attention? Did you view these advertisements on any social media sites (Youtube, Facebook, etc) after the Superbowl? Did you think the Dorito: Crash the Super Bowl advertisement was a success? Why?

  1. I really like all of them but my favorite from the last super bowl commercials is GO DADDY. This is got my attention strongly because how could they mix the beauty with a big, fat boy. It is something weird actually. What else I like in this adv is the way that they use to film and shoot it. They use a classic old way to do the advertisement, and the elements and objects in the location were so limited, so this factor help them to get the second top super bowl commercials according to this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EP-DddOGZOQ.

In addition, if you see this video just for one time, you will not definitely see it again. This is the way that the crew of adv work in.

  2. I enjoy the commercials displayed during the Super Bowl. My favorite this year would have to be the Dodge Ram "So God made a farmer" commercial. For Dodge to branch out from their typical truck pulling 2 tons of weight and it's durability aspect of it's drivetrain to actually connecting on a emotional level with consumers was just amazing. Also, in a society where there is high debate on religious inclusions in everything; Dodge stood strong and included religion in the most seen commercial in the world. However, I do not understand how or why organizations spend so much money and time to create an advertisement that they only run once? Why not run these commercials for a couple weeks to get more for their money?

  3. As Justin mentioned, the dodge commercial was the most notable mostly because of its length. They clearly paid a pretty penny to run that ad seemingly during every commercial break. Throughout the years I think budwiser has made the most memorable and notable commercials, from the "wassssup" to the frogs and clydesdales.

I think the doritos user-generated commercial was a great idea. Financially it saved them millions in production and air time costs. It also allowed them a direct line to seeing what their customers think about their product and want to see from the brand in the future. It acted as a focus group as well as viral marketing where others had to watch many to vote increasing their exposure.

  5. I feel Doritos was one of the few companies that had interesting commercials during this past super bowl. Sadly super bowl commercials are not as funny as they used to be. But the Doritos commercial that involved a do killing a cat and the owner seeing him doing so, but kept is mouth shut for Doritos was pretty funny. I don't know if this was submitted by a random person, but I found it very funny.

  6. I don't really watch major sporting events, but there are two commericials that I really enjoy..the M&Ms commericial when Red sees Brown and says "so it;s that kind of party!" and the current Gieco commercial the camel. That "Huummp Daay" line makes me laugh every time. I think these got my attention because they use non-human characters with human qualities and use current music and slang...even though they are not human, you can identity with them.

  7. My favorite commercial from the most recent Superbowl was in fact the Doritos commercial. I remember following this campaign online because for the past 2 years some of my good friends have competed in this contest. While they have yet to win it helped my friend Byron land a gig doing advertising for another firm. I feel crowdsourcing is great way to generate new creative advertising.

  8. My favorite this year was actually the doritos one and the farmers one. The Go Daddy commercial was disgusting and I really preferred laughing and the connectivity of the farmers commercial to it's target market. For us to remember these commercials, the companies must have had a great idea because that is how a brand is supposed to promote there material.
